Patient was educated on the side effects of using Neomycin as follows:

  1. Central nervous system findings
  • Neomycin use can sometimes result in severe dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, tremors, and seizures.
  1. Oral ulcers
  • Individuals taking Neomycin can sometimes present with oral ulcers, swollen gums, and difficulty swallowing.
  1. Ototoxicity
  • Neomycin intake in high doses can lead to reversible hearing loss.
  • Also, Neomycin can lead to loss of hair cells and damage to the vestibule of inner ear, which is an important organ maintaining balance and equilibrium in the human body.
  • Damage to the vestibule can result in poor balance and equilibrium. Sometimes, the damage can be severe causing the hearing loss to be permanent.
  • Normal therapeutic doses of Neomycin in individuals with compromised renal function can lead to incomplete elimination of Neomycin and elevated drug levels for longer duration, thus precipitating ototoxicity and hearing loss.
  1. Renal damage
  • Acute renal failure with little or absolutely no urine formation happens to be one major side effect of Neomycin intake.
  • Renal injury and altered kidney function can result in increased creatinine levels in the body, accumulation of other wastes resulting in altered levels of consciousness, abrupt weight gain and fluid retention, secondary to reduced urine formation.
  • Renal function can be reversible after discontinuation of Neomycin.
  • Individuals in dehydration are more prone to renal damage with Neomycin.
