Patient was educated on contraindications for using Naproxen as follows:
- Naproxen must be avoided or used cautiously in individuals with history of exacerbation of SOB with episodes of asthma and growth of nasal polyps with other NSAIDs.
- Naproxen has the potential to compromise coronary circulation and result in chest pain and myocardial infarction. So, Naproxen must be avoided or used cautiously in individuals with history of myocardial infarction. Naproxen must also be avoided during immediate post-surgical period, in individuals who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
- Naproxen is mainly metabolized by the liver and Naproxen intake can lead to hepatic injury. Individuals with history of compromised liver function cannot metabolize Naproxen and this can lead to increased blood levels of Naproxen for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Naproxen should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
- Naproxen is significantly excreted in the urine. Individuals with compromised renal functions tend to retain the drug in the circulation longer, thus resulting in toxicity. Naproxen should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
