Patient was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Metronidazole as follows:

  1. Discuss with your doctor regarding any previous allergic responses you experienced with antibiotics belonging to the Nitroimidazole group, such as, Tinidazole and Ornidazole.
  2. Patients with history of antibiotic associated diarrhea must be cautious about using Metronidazole. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same. Report to your doctor regarding any persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, and blood or mucus in the stool. These findings could occur even weeks after discontinuation of Metronidazole and must be reported.
  3. Metronidazole intake with alcohol can result in intense dizziness and confusion along with extreme nausea and vomiting with flushing of skin. Avoid taking Metronidazole with alcohol. One should stay away from activities, such as, driving and operating heavy machinery, until they are used to the side effects caused by Metronidazole.
  4. Individuals with history of seizures and hallucinations can present with exacerbation of these symptoms with Metronidazole. Metronidazole should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with seizure history.
