Patient was educated on the side effects of using Metamucil as follows:

  1. Abdominal discomfort
  • Metamucil absorbs water and swells in the intestines, giving rise to an unpleasant bloating sensation, abdominal discomfort, and flatulence.
  1. Dehydration
  • Since Metamucil takes large amount of water to be able to exert their effects, caution must be exercised with regards to rehydration.
  • Noncompliance with rehydration can lead to episodes of intense dehydration.
  • A deliberate effort for rehydration should be made, especially in senior citizens, as they frequently present with diminished sensitivity to thirst and are likely to skip drinking water.
  1. Poor absorption of other medication
  • Metamucil can reduce the absorption of certain prescription medications.
  • Space Metamucil out by at least 2 hours from other medications.
