Patient was educated on contraindications for using Meropenem as follows:

  1. Patients with history of antibiotic associated diarrhea must be cautious about using Meropenem. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same.
  2. Patients with history of opportunistic infections must be cautious about using Meropenem. Discuss with your doctor regarding your history of the same.
  3. Patients with history of diminished hearing and ototoxicity are at increased risk for hearing loss with Meropenem. Discuss with your doctor regarding safety with Meropenem use.
  4. Individuals with history of seizures and hallucinations can present with exacerbation of these symptoms with Meropenem. Meropenem should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with seizure history.
  5. A minor part of the Meropenem given IV is metabolized by the liver and long term Meropenem intake can lead to hepatic injury. Individuals with history of compromised liver function cannot metabolize Meropenem and this can lead to increased blood levels of Meropenem for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Meropenem should be avoided or used with extreme caution in such individuals.
