Obstructive sleep apnea is a relatively more common type of sleep apnea, arising due to excessive relaxation of and poorly functioning airway muscles in the throat. Excessive relaxation of and poorly functioning airway muscles in the throat lead to narrowing or closure of the respiratory airways, resulting in obstructive sleep apnea with the following signs and symptoms.

  1. Dry mouth & throat: Deep snoring and episodes of gasping for air with mouth wide open can lead to dryness of mouth & throat, with associated soreness & discomfort.
  2. Interrupted sleep pattern: Multiple apneic spells followed by abrupt awakenings throughout the night can make the sleep very interrupted.
  3. Restlessness & Mood changes during waking hours: Poor rest during the night due to interrupted sleep pattern can leave the individual with obstructive sleep apnea very restless the following morning. Individuals can present with irritability and anxiety, secondary to sleep deprivation.
