Patient was educated on Ketoconazole and its mechanism of action as follows:
- Ketoconazoleis an antifungal medication that inhibits synthesis of Ergosterol.
- Ergosterol is a component of fungal cell membrane and is very important for the survival of the fungus.
- Inhibition of sterol synthesis in the fungal cell wall by Ketoconazole, makes the fungus more susceptible to Ketoconazole. Thus, Ketoconazole inhibits growth of the fungus.
- Ketoconazole is used in the treatment of tinea corporis (ring worm), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea pedis (athlete’s foot).
- Ketoconazole is also used to inhibit the growth of some yeast infections.
- Ketoconazole is also available as an OTC shampoo, for control of dry scaly scalp and dandruff.
