Patient was educated on contraindications for using Janumet as follows:

  1. Janumet for the significant part is excreted unchanged by the kidneys with very small portion being metabolized in the liver. Individuals with liver and renal dysfunction, cannot metabolize and excrete Janumet normally. In such patients with compromised liver and renal functions, Janumet can stay active in circulation for longer time and can result in serious hypoglycemic episodes. So, Janumet is contraindicated in such individuals.
  2. Avoid using Janumet along with alcohol. This can increase the risk of stomach upset with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  3. Avoid using Janumet in patients with history of metabolic acidosis with symptoms like rapid breath and heart rate, confusion, and stomach upset with nausea and vomiting.
  4. Acute pancreatitis is a rare, but serious side effect of using Janumet. Patients present with a severe upper abdominal pain, radiating to the back, along with nausea and vomiting. Janumet is contraindicated in individuals with history of acute pancreatitis.
  5. Patients taking Janumet rarely can present with an acute gross reduction in urine volume or with absolutely no urine formation. So, Janumet is contraindicated in individuals with history of compromised renal function.
