Patient/caregiver was instructed upon precautions to be observed while taking insulin as follows:

  1. Take the medication at the same time, every day, to avoid forgetting the medication. Taking insulin at regularly spaced intervals along with compliance for recommended dietary measures helps to prevent any gross fluctuations in blood sugar numbers and maintain them in the target range. Discuss with your physician or nutritionist regarding your recommended diet plan and calorie intake limitations, if any.
  2. Maintain strict compliance with intake of insulin as ordered, with regards to dosage and frequency, to derive the benefit of the medication.
  3. Do not change the dose on insulin, without your physician’s recommendation.
  4. Excess physical activity to recommended can burn extra calories, which could change/lower the insulin requirements in individuals. Administering the regular dose of insulin to these individuals can severely lower the blood sugar numbers (hypoglycemia). Observe compliance with recommended exercise schedule and do not over perform on physical activity.
  5. Determine your meal and snack times and strictly adhere to the time. Observing compliance with the time of nutrition intake and the time of medication intake can help significantly with the goal of regulating blood sugar numbers at the desired level and prevent development of undesired complications.
