Patient was educated on contraindications for using Fluconazole as follows:
- In patients with GERD, taking Omeprazole, Fluconazole can inhibit the metabolism of Omeprazole, thus elevating the blood levels of Omeprazole for a longer duration, causing increased nausea, vomiting, and flatulence. Space Fluconazole out by at least 2 hours from taking Omeprazole to avoid this complication. Discuss with your doctor regarding other medications you take regularly and any possible interactions they can have with Fluconazole.
- Fluconazole should be avoided in individuals with history of cardiac arrhythmias, as it has the potential to exacerbate any underlying arrhythmias. Such individuals upon taking Fluconazole could present with irregular heartbeats and life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. Individuals with history of chronic disturbance in serum magnesium and potassium ions are at increased risk for arrhythmias. Also, individuals taking Lasix are at increased risk for losing potassium, thus setting the ground for life-threatening arrhythmias, upon taking Fluconazole.
- Fluconazole intake can increase the risk for skin rash, ranging from mild to severe exfoliating rash and blisters. Individuals with history of extreme skin rashes should be aware of this response and observe a close watch on the same, while taking Fluconazole.
