Patient/caregiver was instructed upon complications of BPH as follows:

Damage to urinary bladder:

  1. Inhibited flow of urine in individuals with BPH can result in difficulty emptying the urinary bladder.
  2. This leads to back-up of urine in the bladder, which increases pressure in the urinary bladder.
  3. This increased pressure in the bladder can progressively overstretch the bladder, weaken, and damage the bladder walls.
  4. This can result in bleeding from bladder walls and presentation with blood in the urine.
  5. Damaged bladder cannot contract effectively and so, cannot empty completely of the urine content, leading to further back-up of urine.

Compromised renal function:

  1. Increased pressure in the bladder eventually can mount the pressure on the kidneys and make it difficult for the kidneys to empty the urine via the ureters into the bladder.
  2. Increased pressure on the kidneys and enhanced frequency of UTI can lead to progressive and permanent kidney damage.
  3. This can result in poor renal function with improper elimination of wastes in urine.
  4. As kidneys play an important role in blood pressure control, red blood cell production, and vitamin D synthesis, damage to the renal function can increase risk for poorly managed blood pressure, anemia, and vitamin D deficiency.
