Patient/caregiver was instructed upon prostate gland and functions of the gland as follows:
- Prostate is a gland in males, located between the urinary bladder and penis.
- Prostate surrounds the urethra, an outlet to the urinary bladder connecting the bladder to the external urethral opening and helping with elimination of urine out of the body.
- Prostate secretes fluid, which along with secretions from the seminal vesicles, a pair of glands found in the male pelvis, form major component of semen.
- Prostatic fluid mainly nourishes sperm cells produced by the testicles and secreted into the semen. By nourishing the sperm cells and maintaining them viable, prostate gland helps with male fertility.
- The prostate gland along with other muscles of the male perineum (area between anus and scrotum) help with ejaculation of semen, by directing the semen into the urethra.
