Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while taking Midazolam as follows:
- Continue taking Midazolam, as recommended, even if you obtain relief from the presenting symptoms. Discontinuing the medication abruptly, without your physician’s recommendation, can result in disruption of chemical balance in the brain, resulting in severe withdrawal symptoms. Discontinuing the medication should be gradual and only as recommended by your physician. Individuals, on sudden withdrawal of Midazolam, can present with complaints such as, exacerbation of anxiety episodes, precipitation of seizures, muscle spasms and unpleasant withdrawal symptoms of insomnia, impulsiveness, agitation, hallucinations, mania, and suicidal thoughts. Report any development of and/or deterioration of symptoms of mood disorder following Midazolam withdrawal, immediately to your physician, so that, a change in plan of care could be considered.
- When prescribed for longer duration, midazolam can take some time to fairly adjust to your body, before any consistent relief with your complaints and easing of side-effects is experienced. So, do not discontinue taking the medication without your physician’s consult, as you failed to see the desired result immediately after taking the medication.
- Your physician could change the dose of midazolam, based on the response you show. Notify your doctor of any unresolving anxiety, muscle spasms, episodes of seizures, insomnia, or continuing unpleasant side-effects, so that, your dosage on the medication could be revised. Maintain compliance with follow-up physician appointments and be accommodative to the plan of dose changes, until you show an optimum response.
- Caregivers should be aware and keep a close watch on the symptoms of overdose with midazolam. Individuals can present with severe confusion, dizziness, very low blood pressure numbers, severe difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness. In the event of an overdose, seek emergency medical service to prevent fatal outcome.
