Patient was educated on Ciprofloxacin and its mechanism of action as follows:
- Ciprofloxacin is abroad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against several bacteria.
- This is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of Fluoroquinolones.
- Ciprofloxacin acts by inhibiting topoisomerase enzyme, which is needed to separate the replicated bacterial DNA strands.
- Separation of the bacterial DNA strands is needed for bacterial division and progression of infection. Topoisomerase enzymes help during this step of bacterial division.
- Inhibition of topoisomerase enzymes prevents separation of bacterial DNA strands, which prevents bacterial division and progression of infection.
- Ciprofloxacin is an antibacterial agent and does not act against any viral infections.
