Patient/caregiver was educated on safety precautions to be observed while using a cane as follows:
- Standard canes also come with detachable bases and a broad base with four legs could be fixed on the regular standard cane, thus converting it into a quad cane. With bigger base and four legs, quad canes offer more support for individuals with compromised balance and needing more support than a what a standard cane offers.
- Plan your trip ahead, while using the cane. If you think you cannot reach your destination or complete the trip without taking a break, please listen to your instinct. Take a break, sit, relax, and resume your walk. Be aware of your endurance levels and plan your breaks accordingly, as needed.
- While the cane is in use, hold the handle tightly with one hand. Do not try carrying any items, such as, a book or cup with the other hand, as you need it for tasks, such as, opening the door and holding on to siderails for extra support etc., Trying to maneuver around with an occupied hand can lead to compromised support and safety, thus increasing the fall risk.
- While walking on a flat surface, the golden rule to remember is the cane will lead and the weaker leg always goes with the cane simultaneously, followed by the good leg.
- Make sure the leg of the cane is touching the ground evenly. Uneven cane leg can impair the balance of the cane and make it wobbly, which can enhance your fall risk. The leg of the cane must be sturdy enough to support your weight.
