Patient was educated on contraindications for using Cefotaxime as follows:

  1. Cefotaxime carries the risk for hepatic and renal damage and so, should be used with caution in individuals with history of compromised liver and renal functions. Watch closely for symptoms of exacerbation of liver and renal disease in individuals taking Cefotaxime.
  2. Also, Cefotaxime is significantly metabolized by the liver and is excreted in the urine. Individuals with compromised liver function cannot metabolize Cefotaxime and this can lead to increased blood levels of Cefotaxime for longer duration, leading to toxicity. Individuals with compromised renal function tend to retain the drug in the circulation longer, thus resulting in toxicity. Cefotaxime should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with compromised hepatic and renal functions.
  3. Individuals with history of seizures and hallucinations can present with exacerbation of these symptoms with Cefotaxime. Cefotaxime should be avoided or used with extreme caution in individuals with seizure history.
  4. Cefotaxime intake can increase the risk for skin rash, ranging from mild to severe exfoliating rash and blisters. Individuals with history of extreme skin rashes and taking Cefotaxime should be aware of this response and observe a close watch on the same.
