Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Orphenadrine as follows:

  1. Orphenadrine can induce relaxation of intestinal smooth muscle with slowing of bowels and constipation. Orphenadrine use can worsen the symptoms of duodenal or intestinal obstruction, sharply increasing risk for intestinal back-up and in severe cases, even a rupture of intestines. Discuss with your physician regarding history of intestinal blockage or obstruction, if any. Orphenadrine could be avoided for a safer alternative in individuals with history of slow bowels or intestinal obstruction.
  2. Orphenadrine use can result in difficulty with the flow of fluid in the eye that helps to maintain the eye pressure. This can contribute to increased pressure in the eye. Poor control of eye pressure can lead to retinal damage and blurred vision. Orphenadrine could be avoided for a safer alternative in individuals with history of glaucoma. Individuals with history of glaucoma (elevated eye pressure) must be aware of this side-effect in case of orphenadrine use. Such individuals must promptly report to the physician regarding any headaches, eye pain, and vision disturbances. Individuals taking orphenadrine must observe compliance with periodical vision exam for early detection of any retinal damage and blurring of vision.
  3. Orphenadrine could interact with a number of other medications and can precipitate serious reactions. If you are being newly started on orphenadrine, discuss with your physician regarding all other medications you are currently taking and their safety with orphenadrine. Also, if you have been taking orphenadrine for long, discuss with your physician regarding your history of orphenadrine intake, when you are being started on any new medication.
