Patient/caregiver was educated on contraindications for using Orphenadrine as follows:
- Orphenadrine use, especially in individuals with history of mood disorders, can occasionally result in exacerbation of mania and depressive symptoms, changes in behavior, anxiety, fast and pounding heartbeat, and hallucinations. Orphenadrine could be avoided for a safer alternative or used with extra caution in individuals with history of mood disorders, with close watch for symptoms of exacerbation of mania and depression.
- Action of the chemical acetylcholine in the brain can contribute towards preventing dementia. Reduced activity of acetylcholine secondary to orphenadrine use can increase risk for dementia. Orphenadrine use can lead to quick deterioration of mental faculties in individuals diagnosed with dementia. So, orphenadrine could be avoided for a safer alternative in individuals with established dementia.
- Orphenadrine can induce relaxation of bladder with retention of urine and difficulty emptying the bladder. Orphenadrine use can worsen the symptoms of prostate hypertrophy, increase urinary retention and difficulty emptying the bladder. Orphenadrine could be avoided for a safer alternative in individuals with history of prostate enlargement and hypertrophy. Increased retention of urine in the bladder with orphenadrine can sharply increase the risk for urinary tract infections.
