Patient/caregiver was instructed upon therapeutic use of citalopram as follows:

Major depression

• Citalopram increases the serotonin concentration and enhancing the actions of serotonin at the junction between nerve cells.
• This helps with contributing to relief of anxiety, control symptoms of depression, and promote feelings of well-being, contentment, and happiness.

Bipolar disorder

• Citalopram can be used along with antipsychotics, such as, olanzapine, for management of depressive symptoms in individuals with history of bipolar disorder.

Anxiety

• Promotion of serotonin actions in nervous system with citalopram contributes to improved relaxation, relief of anxiety, and promotion of feelings of contentment and happiness.
• So, citalopram can be used for mood enhancement and management of mild agitation and anxiety.
