Patient was educated on the cautions to be exercised with liquid oxygen as follows:
- Avoid contact with frosted connectors of both the stationary and portable units.
- Exercise caution while filling the units, to avoid contact with liquid oxygen.
- Liquid oxygen is oxygen stored at extremely low temperatures. When exposed to this oxygen at frozen temperatures, oxygen can cause frostbite and severe damage to tissues.
- Keep the portable unit always in an upright position. Laying the unit inclined or placing it on its side can result to liquid oxygen leak from the container.
- Liquid oxygen expands and turns to gas, when it is exposed to room temperature. Liquid oxygen can expand several times, when it turns to gas and is highly inflammable.
- Strict compliance with no smoking in the indoor should be observed. Compliance with no smoking should also be observed, while transporting the unit of liquid oxygen in the car.
- Store the units in well-ventilated areas.
- Avoid using equipment that can result in sparks, such as, electric razors and hair dryers, with liquid oxygen in use.
- Avoid using oil and petroleum-based moisturizers, if you are using liquid oxygen. Always, read through the ingredients, when you are purchasing a moisturizer. Make sure that the moisturizer is water based and not petroleum based.
