Patient was educated that risk factors for hypoxia include various conditions that can set grounds for onset of hypoxic symptoms. Some of the conditions leading to hypoxia are as follows:

  1. High altitude
  • Partial pressure of oxygen is the force maintaining oxygen bound to hemoglobin and it is only the oxygen bound to hemoglobin that is picked up by tissues.
  • At high altitudes, partial pressures are low and so, oxygen binding to hemoglobin also is low. So, oxygen delivery to tissues will be low, resulting in hypoxia.
  1. Anemia
  • It is only the oxygen bound to hemoglobin that is picked up by tissues.
  • Low iron and hemoglobin levels obviously translate into less oxygen carriage and so, tissues receive less amount of oxygen and lead to hypoxia.
