Patient was instructed advantages of pursed lip breathing as follows:

  1. Helps with keeping the airways open for a longer duration of time during exhalation.
  2. Longer duration of exhalation will help release of trapped air in the lungs
  3. Releasing trapped air and better emptying of airways will promote deep breathing and accommodation of more fresh air in the next cycle, which improves overall ventilation
  4. Improved ventilation helps better oxygen transport, reduces anxiety and shortness of breath, and provides relaxation
  5. Creates a pressure inside the chest, which helps moving air out of chest with little effort, thus reducing the work of breathing and saving more energy for the patient.
  6. Slows down the respiratory rate per minute, as the duration of exhalation is prolonged
  7. Pursed lip breathing is easy to practice and can be performed anytime of the day, while resting in the recliner or in the bed.
