Patient was instructed regarding management measures for chronic bronchitis as follows:
- Compliance with smoking cessation is an important measure to avoid episodes of exacerbation of bronchitis.
- Request family members who are smokers, to avoid smoking around you in the house. This will help avoiding passive smoking too.
- Avoid contact with family members and friends, who are sick and down with flu or pneumonia or any other respiratory infection.
- Breathe in using a humidifier. Moist air helps to thin the mucus, so that, it can be easily coughed up.
- Maintain compliance with regular fluid intake. Drinking plenty of fluids will help prevent dehydration and also help to thin the mucus, thereby, helping it to be coughed up.
- Use any OTC expectorant to cough the secretions up, as accumulated secretions in the respiratory tracts can get infected and result in pneumonia.
- Observe compliance with any antibiotics prescribed, to contain the infection.
- Limit activity only as endurance allows and plan activities around the time of the day, when you have the maximum energy.
