Patient was educated on atelectasis as follows:

  1. Atelectasis is collapse of a lobe or portion a lung.
  2. Atelectasis is mostly secondary to blockage of the airways conducting air to the distal portions of the lung.
  3. When the airways are blocked, air does not pass through the airways to the distal alveoli in the lung.
  4. So, the parts of lung that are not receiving the ventilation remain collapsed.
  5. Reduced ventilation leads to reduced oxygen transport and thereby, result in dyspnea and reduced energy levels.
  6. Blocked airways and under ventilated portions of the lung can be potential sites for bacterial infections and patient can present with pneumonia.
