Patient was educated on pathophysiology of acute bronchitis as follows:
- Acute bronchitis is an episode of bronchitis that comes on abruptly and usually clears up in a two-week time frame.
- Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi, which are the airways conducting air from the trachea to the lungs.
- Inflammation of the bronchi leads to swelling of the bronchial wall with increase in the mucus production.
- Acute bronchitis can be caused by an inhalation of foreign material that can cause irritation of the bronchi.
- This inhaled foreign substance can be any respiratory virus, such as flu, pollen, smoke, vehicle exhaust, or even food particles. During episode of aspiration into the lungs, the inhaled foreign substance causes an acute episode of bronchitis.
