Patient/caregiver was educated on role of proteins in the body as follows:

  1. Together with carbohydrates and fats, proteins are one of the major nutrients. Proteins store rich energy and each gram of protein, upon metabolism, yields 4 calories of energy. Deficiency of proteins can result in energy deprivation and weakness.
  2. Protein is an important building block and forms the connective framework in all the body tissues, such as, hair, skin, nails, bones, muscle, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and blood vessels.
  3. Human body is in a state of constant turnover, with new cells being synthesized to replace the old cells that progressively become poorly functional and die. Protein is very essential for the synthesis of new cells, thus helping in the growth and maintenance of body tissues.
  4. Human tissues can suffer injury from illness and physical damage. Damaged cells & tissues in human body undergo a constant process of repair and recycling. Protein is key element helping in the repair of damaged body tissues and healing of wounds.
