Patient/caregiver was educated on pathophysiology of hypotension as follows:

  1. Blood Pressure is the force exerted by the blood on the walls of the blood vessels.
  2. The ideal numbers on this reading are 120/80.
  3. The upper number is systolic blood pressure. This is pressure created by the blood in the arteries, when the heart contracts. Any number on systolic, less than 90 is considered low and hypotensive.
  4. The lower number is diastolic blood pressure. This is pressure created by the blood in the arteries, when the heart relaxes to accommodate blood filling. Any number on diastolic, less than 60 is considered low and hypotensive.
  5. Hypotension can be called acute or chronic, depending on the acuity of onset of symptoms.
  6. Acute hypotension is characterized by sudden onset of severe hypotensive symptoms.
  7. Chronic hypotension is persistent and continuing low BP numbers and remains asymptomatic in most individuals. When chronic hypotension manifests with symptoms, it can severely affect quality of life, due to fatigue and dizziness.
