Patient was educated on measures for prevention of gout as follows:
- As metabolism of purines yield uric acid, all food sources rich in purines can ultimately result in excessive uric acid production, which can contribute significantly towards an acute episode of gout.
- All dietary sources rich in purines, such as organ meats and seafood, must be avoided or consumed sparingly by individuals with history of gout.
- Also, as uric acid is soluble in water and excreted in the urine, any compromise in the hydration status of an individual with history of gout can result in poor solubility of uric acid, crystallization, and consequently, result in acute episode of gout.
- So, maintaining the recommended daily fluid intake is an important step towards prevention of exacerbation of gout.
- Avoiding/limiting high saturated fats and alcoholic beverages can also help prevent flare-up of gout.
