Patient was educated on life-style measures to be observed by individuals with history of folate deficiency as follows:

  1. Poor dietary habits and malnutrition in individuals happens to be one major reason for folate deficiency. Observe compliance with good balanced dietary habits and calorie intake requirements, as recommended, to prevent development of folate deficiency.
  2. A portion of folate consumed in the diet is used by the body for metabolic needs. The unused portion of the vitamin is excreted in the urine and is not stored in the body. Since folate is not stored in the body, it must be consumed as an essential part of everyday meal.
  3. Incorporate good amounts of fortified cereals, organ meat, fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, and eggs in your diet to prevent folate deficiency.
  4. Alcohol abuse can interfere with folate absorption in the intestines, lead to a malnutrition state, and result in folate deficiency. Also, excessive alcohol intake can increase the frequency of urination with increased excretion of folate in the urine, contributing to deficiency of the vitamin.  Observe compliance with recommendation regarding moderation or abstinence on alcohol intake.
