Patient/caregiver was educated on anemia as follows:
- Anemia is a condition in which, a patient is deficient on healthy red blood cells.
- Red blood cells perform the task of carrying oxygen and nutrients to all the living body tissues.
- Low red blood cell count can lead to deficient oxygen and nutrient transport to the tissues.
- Anemia can be short term or long term, based on the pathology.
- Short term or acute anemia can be secondary to any acute blood loss in an accident or surgery. The symptoms can be acute or sudden in onset and the condition is easily reversible with arresting the bleed and giving blood transfusions to the patient.
- Long term or chronic anemia can be secondary to chronic pathology, such as, chronic iron or vitamin B12 or folate deficiencies. It can also be autoimmune in origin, when an individual develops antibodies that destroy one’s own red blood cells.
