Patient was educated on complications of ulcerative colitis as follows:

  1. Risk for clot formation
  • Reduced fluid absorption in the large intestines and dehydration can increase the risk for an individual to form blood clots.
  1. Anemia
  • If the blood loss is heavy, patients can present with symptoms of iron deficiency anemia, such as, extreme shortness of breath, pale skin and mucous membranes, dizziness, fatigue, and exhaustion.
  1. Osteoporosis
  • Anti-inflammatory steroid medications prescribed for managing the symptoms of ulcerative colitis can result in weakening of bones and steroid induced osteoporosis in long run and can result in pathological fractures.
