Patient was educated on complications of ulcerative colitis as follows:
- Severe bleeding with blood loss in stool
- The inflammation can lead to ulcerations in the large intestines, leading to hemorrhage and bleeding.
- This bleeding can be fresh and bright with some mucus.
- Diffusely swollen colon
- The inflammation in the wall of large intestine can result in rapid diffuse swelling of the colon, a toxic megacolon.
- This can result in obstruction of the large intestine.
- Perforation of large intestine
- Swollen and weakened wall of large intestine can result in perforation of the intestine, peritonitis, and shock.
