Patient was educated on foods to avoid on a renal diet as follows:
- While picking nuts and seeds, avoid all salted versions, to observe compliance with low salt intake recommendation. Select from the products that are raw or roasted.
- Many salt substitutes currently marketed, such as, lite salt & Nu salt, are very high in potassium content and so must be avoided. Exercise caution with products listing potassium in their content column, to promote compliance with low potassium intake recommendation.
- Limit consumption of/avoid fruits that are rich in potassium, such as, bananas, oranges, papaya, mango, peaches, and prunes. Also, dried fruits such as, dates, raisins, apricots, and figs are rich in potassium content.
- Limit consumption of/avoid vegetables rich in potassium, such as, avocados, broccoli, potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, coconut, pumpkin, squash, spinach, black beans, soybeans, tofu, fava beans, lima beans, kidney beans, green peas, and all lentils. Any sauces, condiments, and mixes containing tomato are also rich sources of potassium and so, intake must be limited for individuals on low potassium recommendation.
- Limit consumption of/avoid nuts and seeds rich in potassium, such as, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, squash seeds, flax seeds, hazelnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, peanuts, cashews, walnuts, and pistachios.
