Patient/caregiver was educated on measures to plan for high residue diet recommendation as follows:
- While having canned soup, you can add some freshly cut or frozen vegetables to the soup, such as, carrots, peas, green beans, cauliflower chunks, and potatoes. Soup as such is poor in fiber and adding vegetables to it can turn the soup fiber rich. While adding potatoes, you can choose to add the potatoes with skin on, as the skin is rich in fiber content.
- Fresh greens, such as, spinach, kale, lettuce, arugula, and watercress can be good fiber rich items on salad during mealtime. Having a salad for meal can also help with quickly feeling full, reduce calorie intake, improve blood sugar control in diabetics, and promote weight loss in obese individuals.
- Choose to have bread, pasta, and pizza made of whole wheat against white bread, to improve the fiber content of the meal. While having rice, choose to have brown rice against refined white & polished rice.
- Fresh whole fruit is a rich source of fiber and other nutrients and can significantly contribute to improved fiber intake. Rely more on fresh whole fruits, such as, pears, bananas, apples, peaches, and berries for snack against unhealthy snacks, such as, potato chips, granola bars, rice cakes, and pretzels. Also, prefer having the whole unpeeled fruit, such as, oranges, pears, and berries, against having juice, as skin of fruits is very rich in fiber.
