Patient/caregiver was educated on guidelines for 2-gram sodium diet as follows:
- Many alternative forms of the regular salt are currently marketed as healthier versions, such as, rock salt, sea salt, and garlic salt. All these forms of salt basically have the same nutritive value, sodium content, and so, are equally harmful. These alternative forms of salt also must be avoided, to observe compliance with limited sodium intake recommendation.
- On a 2 grams sodium diet, you are limited to an intake of a maximum of no more than 2 grams or 2000 milligrams daily. The 2 grams limit includes salt that is pre-existing in the foods and preparation products we use for cooking along with the salt we add to our food during cooking.
- As an approximation, one teaspoonful of salt contains about 2300 mg of sodium. So, to observe compliance with the 2 grams sodium diet recommendation, you should limit yourself to a total daily amount of salt, which is less than a teaspoonful.
