Patient was educated on management measures for ischemic bowel disease as follows:
- Patient could be started on pain killers and anti-inflammatory medications to counter the pain and swelling of the intestines.
- A bypass could be created around the blockage in the artery, to promote blood supply to the distal parts of the intestine.
- If the damage is severe, patient could be made NPO and nothing given by mouth to allow some rest for the inflamed and damaged intestinal smooth muscle.
- IV fluids and parenteral nutrition can help manage dehydration and nutrition intake.
- Damaged intestinal segment is at high risk for infection, secondary to poor oxygen supply. So, Patient could be started on antibiotics to manage any infection of the damaged intestinal segment.
- If the intestinal segment is severely necrosed and dead, this portion of the intestine could be surgically removed.
- Managing optimum cholesterol levels and heart function of the patient, by observing compliance with medications and dietary limitations can help the patient with ischemic bowel disease significantly.
