Patient was educated on management measures for diarrhea due to irritable Bowel Syndrome as follows:

  1. Maintain compliance with recommendation for daily volume of fluid intake. Individuals with diarrhea are at high risk for dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. A fluid intake of 2.5 – 3 liters is usually recommended. This volume could be higher in patients with loss of fluid volume and hence the need for supplementation is also more.
  2. Adding food sources rich in soluble fiber to the diet can offer relief in patients with diarrhea. Soluble fiber helps with absorbing excess fluid in the intestines and thereby, helps with making the stool firm.
  3. Avoid food sources with high insoluble fiber, as insoluble fiber will draw more water to the stool and make the stools looser, thus worsening symptoms of diarrhea.
  4. Avoiding caffeinated drinks and chocolate can help reducing excessive stimulation of gut in individuals with diarrhea.
  5. Avoiding milk and milk products in individuals with lactose intolerance can help the symptoms of diarrhea significantly.
