Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be taken with fiber intake recommendation as follows:

  1. Fiber requirements of an average adult vary around 25 – 30 grams per day.
  2. Avoid highly processed foods in your diet plan. Highly processed foods are low on fiber and having such foods in your diet can compromise your fiber intake requirement. Relying more on whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables can be more helpful in meeting your daily fiber intake requirement.
  3. Fiber always absorbs lot of fluid in the gastrointestinal tract, for it to be able to perform intended function. To facilitate this, fiber intake must always be supplemented with fluid intake accordingly. So, observe compliance with fluid intake requirements, as recommended by your physician.
  4. Fiber rich foods must be mixed well with saliva, chewed good, and eaten slow. Eating too rapidly and not chewing fiber well can result in compromised fiber activity, increased bloating, and constipation. Eating rapidly without proper chewing can also result in excess swallowing of air, which can contribute to the bloating sensation.
  5. Plan around 10 minutes for snack time and 30 minutes for mealtime, especially if they have fiber foods on the menu.
