Patient/caregiver was educated on disadvantages of excessive dietary fiber as follows:

  1. Bacteria in the intestines can act on the fiber and lead to production of gas, which can result in excessive bloating, cramping abdominal pain, and discomfort.
  2. Absorption of more fluid by excessive fiber in the stomach can result in increased swelling of fiber, occupying more space in the stomach, and making you feel full longer, which can result in reduced appetite and intake.
  3. Also, excessive fiber in the diet with increased water absorption in the intestines can sometimes result in increased stool softening with loose stools and diarrhea.
  4. Excess of fiber can severely alter the bowel activity, either by causing diarrhea or constipation, and interfere with absorption of essential vitamins and nutrients in the bowel. This can result in compromised absorption of vitamins A, D, E, K, B-complex, iron, and calcium, leading to their respective deficiencies with associated signs and symptoms.
