Patient was educated on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as follows:

  1. Inflammatory bowel disease is a condition, secondary to chronic inflammation in the intestines.
  2. Inflammatory bowel disease can occur due to an abnormal autoimmune response, which develops inflammatory cells that damage the cells of the intestinal wall and lead to symptoms of the inflammatory bowel disease.
  3. Factors like diet and stress can aggravate the symptoms of inflammatory process.
  4. The wall of the intestines in various places become swollen, inflamed and develop ulcers giving rise to intense abdominal pain, diarrhea, discomfort and nutrition impairment.
  5. Depending on the part of the intestines involved, inflammatory bowel disease is divided into two types-
  • Crohn’s Disease- can involve any part along the intestine, both small and large intestines.
  • Ulcerative Colitis- involves the large intestine and rectum only.
