Patient was educated on indications DASH diet as follows:

  • History of stroke:
    • Poorly controlled hypertension is a serious risk factor for stroke and individuals with history of stroke can present with fresh episodes of stroke, secondary to poorly controlled hypertension.
    • DASH diet recommendation with reduced sodium intake in these individuals can lead to reduced risk for further deterioration of BP control and fresh episodes of stroke.
  • Poorly controlled diabetes:
    • Poorly controlled blood sugars can contribute to diabetic nephropathy and compromised kidney function, which can result in poor sodium regulation by kidneys.
    • This can lead to reduced sodium excretion in the urine, with consequent retention of sodium in the body.
    • High sodium levels in the blood can result in poor blood pressure regulation, which can lead to further deterioration of kidney function.
    • DASH diet recommendation with low sodium intake can help with improved BP control and reduce risk for further damage to kidney function.
    • Also, reduced intake of unhealthy fats as part of DASH diet recommendations, can help lose some unhealthy weight, which can contribute to improved sensitivity to insulin, and consequently lead to improved blood sugar control.
