Patient was educated on internal and external hemorrhoids as follows:

  1. Internal hemorrhoids form in the rectum. These hemorrhoids are usually not visible, unless they swell and prolapse outside through the anus.
  2. Internal hemorrhoids mostly are not painful, as pain sensitivity in this area is limited, due to limited nerve supply. Heavily swollen and prolapsed hemorrhoids can give rise to intense pain.
  3. Bleeding, noticed on passing stool, can be the most common presentation of internal hemorrhoids.
  4. External hemorrhoids form in the anal canal, the last part of the gastrointestinal tract.
  5. External hemorrhoids can be seen and are very painful in nature, due to very rich nerve supply in this area. They can result in symptoms, such as, discomfort, pruritus, and bleeding.
  6. Hemorrhoids, both internal and external can develop blood clots in them and can be intensely painful to touch and during bowel movement.
