Patient/caregiver was educated on risk factors for contact dermatitis activation as follows:
- Individuals with history of contact dermatitis tend to show a strong immune response on coming into physical contact with any substances /allergens they are allergic to. These allergens/triggers that individuals respond to could differ from person to person.
- Common allergens/triggers include contact with chemicals used in soaps, sunscreens, fragrances, deodorants, colognes, mosquito repellants, insecticides, cosmetics like face creams and lipsticks. Exposure of skin to these products can initiate a contact dermatitis response. Sometimes, exposure to sun of skin with these products applied can initiate the allergic response causing contact dermatitis. Also, some dressing and industrial materials, metals, and plants can also initiate a dermatitis response on contact.
- Exposure to many of these triggers can also be occupational, owing to the job duties of some individuals, which significantly contributes to the risk for exposure.
- Healthcare professionals can be at increased risk for contact dermatitis from use of latex gloves.
