Patient/caregiver was educated on signs and symptoms of hives as follows:

  1. Hives are swollen, itchy, pale red bumps that occur on the skin in response to exposure to certain allergens/triggers.
  2. Hives can appear anywhere on the skin, involving any body part, such as, face, lips, eyes, tongue, throat, trunk, extremities, and genitals.
  3. Hives can vary in size from small coin to plate sized bumps on the body and usually have a short lifespan.
  4. The hives can disappear from the initial site and reappear to involve other skin sites in a span of 24 – 48 hours.
  5. Hives mostly are mild and hardly need any treatment measures, other than avoiding exposure to the trigger agent.
  6. Very occasionally, hives involving tongue and throat can lead to severe swelling of these body parts and narrow the airways. This can make gas exchange & breathing difficult and can precipitate a medical emergency.
