Patient/caregiver was educated on signs and symptoms of hives as follows:
- Hives are swollen, itchy, pale red bumps that occur on the skin in response to exposure to certain allergens/triggers.
- Hives can appear anywhere on the skin, involving any body part, such as, face, lips, eyes, tongue, throat, trunk, extremities, and genitals.
- Hives can vary in size from small coin to plate sized bumps on the body and usually have a short lifespan.
- The hives can disappear from the initial site and reappear to involve other skin sites in a span of 24 – 48 hours.
- Hives mostly are mild and hardly need any treatment measures, other than avoiding exposure to the trigger agent.
- Very occasionally, hives involving tongue and throat can lead to severe swelling of these body parts and narrow the airways. This can make gas exchange & breathing difficult and can precipitate a medical emergency.
