Patient/caregiver was educated on risk factors for atopic dermatitis activation as follows:

  1. Environmental allergens:Individuals with genetic tendency to present with atopic dermatitis upon exposure to normal allergens in the environment, such as, dust mites, pollen, pet hair, and mold can present with an activation of atopic dermatitis. Triggers can also include chemicals used in sanitary and cosmetic products, such as, soaps, shampoos, disinfectants, deodorants, and colognes.
  2. Dietary allergens: Common dietary allergens with a potential to trigger atopic dermatitis activation in individuals include milk & dairy products, wheat, barley, egg protein, seafood, and soy.
  3. Environmental temperature: Cold environmental temperature can dry the skin out, which can initiate an atopic dermatitis response. Sweating in warm climates and during exercise can also precipitate activation of atopic dermatitis. Sudden changes in environmental temperatures during quick moves from cold to warm and vice versa can also result in activation/worsening of atopic dermatitis.
