Patient/caregiver was educated on measures to manage and prevent eczema as follows:
- Keep a check on your indoor humidity, using a hygrometer you can get from the hardware stores. Maintaining the indoor humidity below fifty percent with the help of a dehumidifier can help prevent exposure to mold & dust mites, improve air quality, and thus prevent activation of eczema.
- Cold environmental temperature can dry the skin out, which can initiate an eczema response. Having an indoor humidifier can help adding moisture to the environment around, prevent drying of skin, and prevent activation of eczema.
- Extremely hot environments can also dry the skin out, initiating an eczema response. Maintain an ideal internal temperature always, to prevent fluctuation between extremes. Sudden changes in environmental temperatures during quick moves from cold to warm and vice versa can also result in activation/worsening of eczema. Avoid any environments with sudden changes and extremes of temperature.
- Sweating in warm climates and during exercise can also precipitate activation of eczema. Avoid being outdoor and choose a temperature-controlled gym for workout program. Avoid hot showers and saunas, as the extremely high temperatures in these units can trigger an eczema response in individuals prone for this skin condition.
