Patient was educated on management measures for dyspepsia as follows:

  1. Avoid having a late-night snack. Having a late-night snack will cut down the interval between food and bedtime and contribute towards acid reflux.
  2. Elevate the head end of bed, about 8 inches, using pillows or foam, so that, it will be difficult for the acid contents of stomach to travel up against gravity.
  3. For obese individuals, with lot of abdominal fat, losing about 10 pounds can significantly help. Losing some abdominal fat can reduce pressure on the abdomen and make regurgitation of acid contents less likely.
  4. Cut down on spicy foods, chocolate, smoking and alcohol, as they increase the chances for acid reflux.
  5. Cut down on high fat and greasy foods and alcohol, as they relax the sphincter preventing movement of acid contents into the esophagus. Relaxing the sphincter can lead to easy reflux of acid contents.
  6. Cut down on caffeinated drinks, as caffeine makes symptoms of reflux more likely.
