Patient was educated on sodium in the diet as follows:
- Sodium is found naturally in a lot of fresh foods we consume, such as, vegetables, fruits, and meat.
- A lot of sodium can be added during processing and preparation.
- Very high amount of sodium is added to canned and processed to preserve for long durations.
- Sodium maintains the fluid balance in our body. Sodium always keeps the water along with it. High amount of sodium in food will amount to excess fluid and blood volume in your body. Excess fluid and blood volume will lead to elevated blood pressures and fluid retention, leading to edema.
- The daily sodium requirement for an average adult is 1500 mg to 2200 mg. So, the physician usually recommends for a 2 gram/2000 mg sodium diet.
