Patient/caregiver was educated on precautions to be exercised while using Rivastigmine patch as follows:

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water after each handling of the patch. Do not rub eyes or handle any food without washing your hands, after handling the Rivastigmine patch. Undue exposure of eyes to the medication can result in redness and irritation of the eyes. Rinse the eyes with water to wash the drug away, to prevent any dangerous side-effects. Exposure to the medication through oral route can result in stomach upset, rapid bowel movements, and diarrhea. Report to your physician and other health care personnel regarding any undue exposure to the medication for any suggestions.
  2. Rivastigmine patch can induce side-effects of nausea and stomach upset. Starting the medication at a low dose and gradually increasing the dose, can contribute to reducing the risk for these unwanted side-effects due to the medication. The nausea and stomach upset, secondary to use of Rivastigmine patch, can be self-limiting and relieved in about a week or two. Smelling ginger or citrus can help contain the unpleasant nausea and vomiting. If the nausea and stomach upset are unrelieved and becomes bothersome, report it to your physician and other health care personnel, for any change in dose or plan of care to be considered.
