Patient/caregiver was educated on the side-effects of using Phenazopyridine as follows:
General allergic reactions
- Phenazopyridine use can result in general allergic reactions, such as, skin rashes, hives, and itching.
- Some patients can present with symptoms of severe allergic and anaphylactic response, such as, difficulty breathing, swelling of face, lips, throat, and tongue, with consequent difficulty breathing. Seek emergency medical help for such findings, especially with difficulty breathing, for any appropriate measures to be considered.
Other constitutional side-effects
- Phenazopyridine can get secreted into various body fluids, such as, urine and tears, and stain the body fluids orange yellow in color. Consequently, in individuals with incontinence and history of wearing soft contact lenses, phenazopyridine can stain the garments and lens orange yellow in color. The stain on the garments and lenses can be permanent, but not dangerous.
- Individuals taking phenazopyridine must keep a close watch on the color of skin and mucus membranes. Any accumulation of phenazopyridine in the body can result in staining of the skin, oral mucosa, and sclera orange yellow.
